Here's my 1982 Seca 650 parked in front of my house on West College Ave in State
College PA. in "naked" mode.
I have about 33,000 miles on her.
For the last 22 years, I've owned this bike. I originally bought this bike for $100!!! A friend distantly knew this guy who was selling it for $900, cause he was moving soon and couldn't take it with him. I was a poor college student musician at the time. I went and looked at the bike and loved it. But it wouldn't start! I told the guy I was interesed even though I didn't have the money. A month later the guy called me and told me that he had to move that day and he would sell me the bike for $100 but I had to come pick it up that day! I grabbed my friend's van and went and got the bike.
The bike wouldn't start! I took the whole damn thing apart and put it back together again...twice! and it still wouldn't start. Finally my friend Tom Ricker (Tom, where are you??) were just sucking on the last few beers in a case of Yeunglings (we made that company what it is today!) and lamenting the fact that I had a very cool bike that just wouldn't run! In a moment of either motorcycle wisdom (Tom had that.) or too much beer (Tom had that too), Tom saw that the wires to the coils were wired up grey to blue and blue to grey. "Should that be like that?" he asked. We reversed the coil plugs and turned her over. Vroom, purrrrrr! 'Cept for oil and filters, I haven't touched the motor since that day!
This bike never fails to put a smile on my face!
Update: Oh---for those of you who have been watching this page for years and have been wondering about whether or not I found Tom. Yes, Tom did eventually find this page on a search of the Internet. He wrote me and now we have each other addresses. That was really cool!
Update 8/2003: The bike is still great. I've removed the fairings and bags again as here in CA, I mostly ride local, to work at my job and to put around the Bay Area. I'm running Mobil One, as I do in all of my engines. The bike starts smoothly each morning and runs well. This is my oldest vehicle; it has been serving me well for 22 years now. Am I getting old or what?!
Update 8/2009: The bike is still great. New grips, oil cooler, tires, shocks and springs, air pressure fork caps, seat.
The XJ:
Over the years, I've done some modifications...

I've got S&W rear shocks. I cut and preloaded the front springs. |

That's a Bosch fog light mounted below my regular LARGE Seca headlight. I love the oversize headlight on the Seca ! I have a 100/120 H4 bulb in the stock light and a 55W bulb in the fog.. WOW! Unfortunately, now that I have the Vetter mounted, I have removed the stock headlight nacelle and am running a Hella 7" H4 lamp. Still running the 100/120 bulb and that Hella is the best 7" you can get. It throws a very nice beam. |

I have replaced the stock fuse box with a Radio Shack model. It's screwed to the top of the battery box. |
| Dunlop Tires. | |

Radio Shack momentary buttons work well to replace the crappy stock starter and horn switches... |

I painted everything including the rear fender red! and moved the rear turn signals
down to the lic plate frame. When you paint the rear fender, make sure you scuff it up
with 600 grit wet sand paper first. I really like the look with the rear fender painted.
It makes the bike look older and classier, I think. I also wired the reflector on the rear
fender to function as a tail light. Cute. Update: my red body work is in storage. I found a parts bike with vintage paint and decals and a nice patina. |

I have air horns. You can see the compressor mounted on the frame in front of the
exhaust headers. The horns are mounted on the stock horn mounts.
Update: Airhorns have been removed and stock horns replaced from parts bike. |
| I have the stock exhaust setup. It's quiet and performs well. I have a spare if you need one. | |

I pulled a right grip starter button/ignition switch assembly off a three cylinder Yammie at the scrap yard which has a light switch. It had the same wiring harness as my xj so I plugged it right in. The benefit of this is that it has a switch marked "lights." I guess the old Yammies had on/off lights. I have this switch controlling my aftermarket Bosch foglamp, but I intend to use it to control the head lamp. I used to leave the fog lamp on all the time, but the other lights on the bike would dim when the revs dropped below 2k. Now all is well and I only use the lamp for high speed driving. |
| By the way, a three cylinder Yamaha that I found at the scrap yard has the same fr brakes as my xj. I have lots of extra parts if you need 'em. | |

The intake manifolds were shot when I bought the bike. Dryrotted. I took them off and coated them (heavily) with 3M black rubber in a tube. It looks kind of crude up close, but it saved me $30 each for the manifolds. It's been fine that way for 19 years. |

I've eliminated the little funnel thingy on the back of the air box and I cut the entire center portion of the lid away with a pair of snippers. I'm using a UNI oiled foam filter. It only increased the engine noise slightly...a little more "throaty". I should probably rejet, but I still get incredible performance out of her. Notice that I've also replaced my fuse holder with a Radio Shack glass tube type holder. |
| I get about 45-55 mpg. The Seca holds amost 5 gallons of gas. | |

I have a sheepskin seat cover that I cut and fitted myself. Vetter fairing from an old
Suzuki or Kawasaki and a universal trunk and hard saddle bags...need to repaint the rack,
kind of rusted, but it holds stuff and its built in back rest keeps me from misplacing
my wife. Update: the bike is now back to naked mode. Vetter is in storage now that I have a K100RT to tour on. Sheepskin cover deteriorated about 10 years ago. |

It even has the stock "power lock" chain! |
| I re brazed and relined the interior of my gas tank because it rusted through last year. I am running a large ceramic in line gas filter. I bought a rebuild kit for the fuel petcock. It was about $20. Easy job and well worth it. I had already turned the gasket 90 degrees once and it was starting to leak. |
DOES ANYONE BODY HAVE A STOCK OIL COOLER THEY WANNA PART WITH?? THEY CAME THIS WAY UP NORTH AND OVERSEAS.
Update: Oil cooler located and installed! Perfect for hot CA summer city driving!
